About

About the WebP to GIF Converter

Convert WebP images into GIF files that older apps, email tools and websites accept. Transparent WebP stickers and graphics stay transparent, and you can convert a whole batch at once.

WebP is Google's modern image format, and many sites now serve their images as WebP to save bandwidth. Right-click and save one of those images, though, and you often end up with a file that an older image viewer, email builder or upload form won't take. GIF is accepted almost everywhere, which makes it a safe fallback. A WebP can be lossy like a JPG or lossless like a PNG, and it can carry full transparency; this converter reads either kind. Transparent areas carry over, with one GIF rule applied: pixels more than half see-through become clear and the rest solid. Photo-style WebPs are reduced to the best 256 colours for that image. An animated WebP is converted as a still GIF of its first frame. The whole process runs in your browser.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to common questions about the WebP to GIF Converter.

How do I convert WebP to GIF?

Add your WebP files above, click "Convert to GIF" and download each result. The GIF keeps the original size and transparency.

Why can't I open a WebP file?

Some older image viewers, editors, email tools and upload forms were built before WebP existed and don't recognise it. Converting to GIF gives you a file they all understand.

Does WebP to GIF keep transparency?

Yes. Transparent areas of the WebP stay clear in the GIF. GIF has no half-transparency, so pixels more than half see-through become clear and the rest solid.

Can I convert an animated WebP to an animated GIF?

No — this converter makes a still GIF from the first frame. For an animated GIF, export the frames and combine them in the GIF Maker.

Will the GIF look worse than the WebP?

Graphics with few colours look the same. Photo-like WebPs are reduced to 256 colours, so smooth gradients can show bands. If you only need wide support for a photo, JPG is usually the better choice.

Why is the GIF larger than the WebP?

WebP compresses much more efficiently than GIF, especially for photos. Shrinking the image first with the Image Resizer is the easiest way to keep the GIF small.

Can I convert many WebP files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like; each WebP is converted in turn and gets its own Download button.

Which browsers can convert WebP here?

Any current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, since they all read WebP natively. The conversion itself happens on your device.

Are my WebP images uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser, and your images never leave your device.
