About the HEIC to GIF Converter

Convert iPhone and iPad HEIC photos into GIF files that any app or website can open. The photos are decoded right in your browser, so even private pictures never leave your device.

HEIC (also called HEIF) is the format iPhones and iPads use for photos by default. It keeps pictures small, but Windows, many websites and lots of older software still can't open it. Most browsers can't show HEIC either, so this page loads a small decoder library from this site the first time you convert one; after that, the photo is decoded and encoded to GIF on your own device. iPhone photos are large — 4032×3024 pixels is typical — and a GIF that size is heavy, so HEIC to JPG is usually the better choice when a small file matters. A GIF holds 256 colours, so smooth skies and skin tones can show faint bands. If a HEIC file holds several images, such as a burst, the first one is converted. Live Photo motion isn't part of the HEIC still, so the GIF is a still picture too.

Guide

Using the HEIC to GIF Converter

  1. 1

    Step 1

Drop your .heic or .heif photos into the box, or click to pick them.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Click "Convert to GIF"; the first HEIC loads a small decoder, then each photo converts in turn.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Download each GIF with its own button.

  • Opens iPhone and iPad HEIC and HEIF photos, which most browsers can't show
  • Decodes the photos on your device with a decoder loaded from this site
  • Uses the first image when a HEIC file holds several
  • Keeps the photo's full width and height
  • Builds a 256-colour palette tuned to each photo
  • Batch conversion with a Download button per photo
  • No upload, no sign-up and no watermark

Sharing on Windows and Android

Friends on Windows PCs or older Android phones can open the GIF when the original HEIC won't show.

Uploading to older websites

Sites and forms that don't recognise HEIC accept the GIF once the photo has been converted.

Older apps and devices

Photo tools and devices that predate HEIC can open the GIF version of a picture.

Private photos

Because nothing is uploaded, personal photos can be converted without handing them to an online service.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to common questions about the HEIC to GIF Converter.

How do I convert HEIC to GIF?

Add your HEIC photos above, click "Convert to GIF" and download each GIF. The first HEIC takes a moment longer while the decoder loads.

What is a HEIC file?

HEIC is the High Efficiency Image format Apple uses for iPhone and iPad photos. HEIF is the same format with a different extension, and both work here.

Are my iPhone photos uploaded to a server?

No. The HEIC decoder is a script loaded from this site, but it runs on your device. Your photos are decoded and converted in your browser and never sent anywhere.

Why is the GIF so large?

A full-size iPhone photo is around 12 megapixels, and GIF compression isn't designed for photos, so the file gets heavy. If you don't specifically need a GIF, HEIC to JPG gives a much smaller file.

Will the photo look the same?

Close, but a GIF holds only 256 colours, so subtle shades are simplified and gradients can show bands. For the best photo quality, HEIC to JPG is the better conversion.

Does it convert Live Photos into animated GIFs?

No. The motion part of a Live Photo is a separate video file, not part of the HEIC, so the GIF is the still photo.

What if my HEIC holds several images?

The first image is converted, and the result notes how many images the file held.

Can I convert many HEIC photos at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like. They're converted one after another, each with its own Download button.

Does it keep the photo's location and camera details?

No. The GIF is drawn from the photo's pixels only, so EXIF data such as GPS location and camera model is not carried over.
