About
Convert AVIF images into GIF files that older software and websites can open. Transparent AVIF graphics stay transparent, and you can convert a whole batch at once.
AVIF is one of the newest image formats, based on the AV1 video codec. It makes very small files, which is why more and more websites serve their images as AVIF. Plenty of image editors, viewers, email tools and upload forms don't support it yet, though, so a saved AVIF can be hard to use. GIF is the opposite: old, simple and accepted almost everywhere. This converter lets your browser decode the AVIF, then encodes it as GIF on your device. AVIF images can hold far more colours than a GIF's 256, so photos are mapped to the best palette for each picture. Transparency carries over, with pixels more than half see-through becoming clear. Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari can all read AVIF; very old browsers can't, and the converter tells you if a file couldn't be read.

AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. It produces very small files with good quality and supports transparency, which is why many websites now use it.
Your browser decodes the AVIF, so it needs a version that supports it: Chrome or Edge 85+, Firefox 93+ or Safari 16.4+. If a file can't be read, the converter shows an error for that file.
Yes. Clear areas stay clear. Pixels more than half transparent become fully clear and the rest fully solid, because GIF has no partial transparency.
For graphics with few colours, no. Photos are reduced to 256 colours, so smooth gradients can show bands. For a photo where quality matters most, AVIF to JPG is the better conversion.
AVIF is one of the most efficient formats there is, while GIF is one of the oldest. Shrinking the image first with the Image Resizer keeps the GIF much smaller.
The first frame is converted into a still GIF.
