About

About the ICO Converter

Converts a PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, BMP or SVG image into an .ico icon file. It's a straight format change: your image keeps its own size and shape, and nothing is cropped or padded.

ICO is the icon format Windows uses for programs, shortcuts and folders, and the format of the classic favicon.ico. This converter only changes the format. The one size rule comes from ICO itself: an icon image can be at most 256×256 pixels, so a larger picture is scaled down to fit, keeping its proportions, while anything 256 pixels or smaller keeps its exact size. Transparency is kept. If you need a full set of favicon sizes for a website — 16×16, 32×32, 48×48, an Apple touch icon and a web manifest — use the Favicon Generator instead. It's one of many free image tools on Toolapt — no sign-up, no watermark and no limit.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to common questions about the ICO Converter.

What is an ICO file?

ICO is the Windows icon format, used for program, shortcut and folder icons and for the classic favicon.ico of a website. It stores the icon as pixels with full transparency.

How do I convert an image to ICO?

Upload the image, click "Convert to ICO", then download the .ico file. There's nothing to set — the converter only changes the format.

Can I convert several images to ICO at once?

Yes. Drop in as many images as you like — they're all converted in one batch, and each .ico file gets its own Download button.

Will my image be resized?

Only if it's bigger than 256×256 pixels, the largest size an ICO image can be. Then it's scaled down to fit, keeping its proportions — a 1200×600 image becomes 256×128. Images 256 pixels or smaller keep their exact size.

Does it crop non-square images?

No. A wide or tall image stays wide or tall — nothing is cropped, padded or stretched. Windows and browsers can show non-square icons, though square images look best as icons.

How do I make favicons in 16, 32 and 48 pixels?

Use the Favicon Generator. This converter makes one ICO from your image as it is; the Favicon Generator makes every favicon size, an Apple touch icon and a web manifest in one ZIP.

What about SVG files?

An SVG has no fixed pixel size, so it's drawn with its longest side at 256 pixels, the largest an ICO image can be, which keeps it sharp.

Does it keep transparency?

Yes. Transparent areas in a PNG, WebP, GIF or SVG stay transparent in the .ico. A JPG has no transparency, so its background stays as it is.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The .ico file is built entirely in your browser, so your image never leaves your device.

Can I convert an ICO file back to PNG?

Not with this tool — it only creates ICO files. To change an image to PNG, JPG or WebP, use the Image Converter.
