  • Three difficulty levels: easy (short everyday words), medium (everyday sentences), and hard (punctuation, numbers and symbols)
  • Untimed mode finishes when you complete the passage, or choose a 1, 2 or 5 minute timed mode that keeps feeding new passage text until time runs out
  • Colors each typed character green (correct) or red (mistake) in real time as you type
  • Calculates words-per-minute from characters typed divided by time, and accuracy from correct characters typed
  • Blocks pasting into the typing area, so results reflect your own typing
  • Lets you download a downloadable certificate image with your WPM, accuracy, time and an optional name
  • Works entirely in your browser — no installs and no sign-up
  • Free to use, with no limit on how many times you run it

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to common questions about the Typing Speed Test.

What does the Typing Speed Test do?

It shows you a random passage to type and measures your words-per-minute and accuracy, either until you finish the passage or until a time limit you choose runs out.

Is the Typing Speed Test free to use?

Yes. It's free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many times you use it.

Is my input safe when I use this tool?

Yes. Everything you type is processed entirely on your own device — nothing is sent to a server. Downloading a certificate also happens locally as an image saved to your device.

How is words-per-minute calculated?

It divides the number of characters you typed by 5 (a common estimate for average word length) and divides that by the time taken in minutes.

How is accuracy calculated?

It compares every character you typed against the correct character at that position and reports the percentage that matched.

Why can't I paste text into the typing area?

Pasting is blocked on purpose — the test is meant to measure your actual typing, so allowing a paste would let you "finish" instantly without typing anything.

Can I use the Typing Speed Test on my phone?

Yes. The page is fully responsive and works on mobile, tablet and desktop browsers alike, though typing speed tests are generally easier on a physical keyboard.

Does the Typing Speed Test have any limitations?

It draws passages from a fixed set for each difficulty level rather than an unlimited pool, so you may see a passage repeat if you take the test many times in a row.
