About

About the Tamil Typing Speed Test

Type real Tamil passages — one of the oldest continuously used scripts in the world — exactly as a Tamil keyboard layout produces them, and get your words-per-minute and accuracy the moment you finish. Pick easy, medium or hard passages depending on how much punctuation and vocabulary you want to handle.

Students preparing for Tamil Nadu government typing and clerical exams use it to check their Tamil speed under a timer, while writers, journalists and office staff who type Tamil every day use it to see whether a new keyboard layout is slowing them down.

Guide

Using the Tamil Typing Speed Test

  1. 1

    Step 1

Choose Easy for short everyday Tamil sentences, Medium for longer ones or Hard for numbers and punctuation, then set no limit or a 1, 2 or 5 minute timer.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Click directly on the Tamil passage text and start typing in Tamil script — there's no separate text box.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Watch vowel signs and the pulli — a cluster turns red if any part of it is wrong — and remember the clock waits for your first keystroke.

  4. 4

    Step 4

When the passage ends or time is up, read your Tamil WPM and accuracy, then press "New passage" or save a certificate labelled with the level and "Tamil".

  • Real Tamil-script passages, typed exactly as Tamil99, phonetic or any other Unicode Tamil layout produces them
  • Counts a consonant with its vowel sign, such as கா, as one character, so WPM reflects the letters you actually see
  • Easy sentences such as பூனை நாள் முழுவதும் சோபாவில் தூங்குகிறது. come first; Hard adds a quotation, a 9:30 meeting and an invoice total of 1,059.32 ரூபாய்
  • Timed runs of 1, 2 or 5 minutes keep feeding new Tamil sentences, so a five-minute run works as a stamina check before a clerical typing test
  • Pasting is blocked and each letter cluster turns green or red as you type, so a missed pulli (்) shows up the moment it happens

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to common questions about the Tamil Typing Speed Test.

What does the Tamil Typing Speed Test do?

It gives you a randomly chosen Tamil sentence — from simple lines about tea and the park up to Hard ones with dates and invoice numbers — and reports your words per minute and accuracy when you finish it or when your chosen timer runs out.

Do I type Tamil directly, in its own script?

Yes — you type Tamil directly, in its own script, exactly as a Tamil keyboard layout would produce it, the same way you'd type any other language here.

What's different about typing in Tamil script compared to English?

Tamil is one of the oldest continuously used scripts in the world, with its own distinct letterforms for consonants and vowels — this test shows and expects that native script directly, not a romanized transliteration.

Which keyboard layout should I use for Tamil?

Any layout that types Tamil script works, because the test only compares the characters you produce. Tamil99, the layout standardised by the Tamil Nadu government, is built into most systems; phonetic layouts that turn English keystrokes into Tamil work just as well.

How are Tamil characters counted for WPM?

WPM counts every five characters as one word, and a character here means one visible letter cluster. A consonant with its vowel sign, such as கா, counts as a single character even though it takes two keystrokes.

Are the numbers in Hard passages Tamil numerals?

No. Dates, times and amounts such as 9:30 and 1,059.32 use the ordinary 0–9 digits, so you type them from the number row of your Tamil layout.

Can I practise for a government typing exam here?

You can rehearse under similar pressure with the 5-minute timer, but the passages are general Tamil sentences rather than official exam material, and your exam's scoring rules may differ from this test's.

Does the timer start as soon as the page loads?

No. The clock starts on your first keystroke, so you can read the passage and get your Tamil keyboard ready before you begin.
