About

About the Chinese Typing Speed Test

Type Chinese passages by entering Pinyin romanization — the same way an input method converts typed keystrokes into Chinese characters — since that's how Chinese is actually typed on a keyboard, rather than character by character. Get your words-per-minute and accuracy the moment you finish.

Learners of Mandarin use it to get faster at the Pinyin they type into a Chinese input method, and Chinese speakers use it as a quick check of their Pinyin typing speed before converting to characters.

Guide

Using the Chinese Typing Speed Test

  1. 1

    Step 1

Choose Easy, Medium or Hard and set no limit or a 1, 2 or 5 minute timer — leave your keyboard on English, since no IME is needed.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Click directly on the passage text and start typing the Pinyin romanization shown — there's no separate text box.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Watch where syllables join — Pinyin words such as meitian and zaoshang run together — and note that timing starts on your first key.

  4. 4

    Step 4

When you finish or the timer ends, read your Pinyin WPM and accuracy, then load a new passage or save a certificate labelled with the level and "Chinese".

  • Chinese passages shown in Pinyin, the romanization you type into a Chinese input method before it converts to characters
  • Works on any standard keyboard — no Chinese input method needs to be installed
  • Easy lines like Mao zai shafa shang shui le yi zheng tian. come first; Hard adds a quotation, 9:30, 1,059.32 yuan and a phone number
  • 1, 2 or 5 minute timers keep loading new Pinyin sentences, so you can build the steady rhythm that IME typing depends on
  • Pasting is blocked and each letter turns green or red as you type, so a dropped g in an -ang or -eng ending is caught immediately

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to common questions about the Chinese Typing Speed Test.

What does the Chinese Typing Speed Test do?

It shows a random Mandarin passage written in toneless Pinyin — from short everyday lines to Hard ones with dates and prices — and measures your words per minute and accuracy until you finish or the timer runs out.

Why do I type Pinyin instead of Chinese characters directly?

Chinese is normally typed by entering Pinyin romanization, which an input method then converts into Chinese characters — typing the romanized form here matches how people actually type Chinese on a real keyboard.

Does this test show tone marks in the Pinyin?

The passages use space-separated Pinyin so the word-by-word scrolling works the same way it does for every other language here; check the passage text shown on screen for the exact characters expected.

Why are some syllables joined together?

Pinyin writes the syllables of one word as a single unit, so 每天 is meitian and 早上 is zaoshang. Type them without a space, exactly as shown.

Do I need a Chinese input method installed?

No. You type the Pinyin exactly as shown with ordinary Latin keys, without switching to a Chinese IME, so it works on any keyboard.

How are words counted when typing Pinyin?

WPM counts every five typed characters, spaces included, as one word — the same rule English typing tests use — so your score is directly comparable with an English result.

Does this measure my real Chinese typing speed?

Partly. It measures how fast you type Pinyin, the first half of real Chinese input; choosing characters from the IME's candidate list adds time this test doesn't include.
