About

About the Character Counter

Counts characters in your text against a limit you set, plus byte size and the ten most frequent characters.

Social media managers use it to stay under a post's character limit, while developers check byte size for fields with a storage cap. It's one of many free text tools on Toolapt, and like every tool here, it's free to use with no sign-up and no limit on how many times you run it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to common questions about the Character Counter.

What does the Character Counter do?

It counts the characters in your text against a limit you set, shows byte size in UTF-8, and lists the most frequent characters.

Is the Character Counter free to use?

Yes. It's free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many times you use it.

Is my text safe when I use this tool?

Yes. Everything you type is processed entirely on your own device — nothing is sent to a server.

Why is byte size different from the character count?

In UTF-8, characters outside the basic ASCII range (accents, emoji, non-Latin scripts) can take up more than one byte each, so byte size can be larger than the character count.

Do I need to click a button to see the counts?

No. All the stats update instantly as you type or paste text, or change the character limit.

What happens when I go over the character limit?

The "Left of limit" figure turns negative and is shown in red, so it's easy to spot at a glance.

Are spaces included in the character count?

The main count includes spaces; a separate figure shows the count with spaces removed.

Does the Character Counter have any limitations?

It's built for everyday text; extremely long documents may be slower to update on lower-powered devices.
