About

About the Thai Typing Speed Test

Type Thai passages by entering RTGS romanization — since the native Thai script runs words together with no spaces between them, a romanized transliteration is used here for space-separated typing practice. Get your words-per-minute and accuracy the moment you finish.

Learners of Thai use it to practise RTGS romanization at speed, and anyone curious uses it for a quick romanized Thai typing check. It measures romanized typing, which is a different skill from typing on the native Kedmanee layout.

Guide

Using the Thai Typing Speed Test

  1. 1

    Step 1

Choose Easy, Medium or Hard and set no limit or a 1, 2 or 5 minute timer — no Thai layout is needed.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Click directly on the passage text and start typing the romanized form shown — there's no separate text box.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Watch letter pairs like ph, th and kh, which stand for single Thai sounds; a slip turns red, and timing starts on your first key.

  4. 4

    Step 4

When you finish or the timer ends, read your WPM and accuracy, then load a new passage or save a certificate labelled with the level and "Thai".

  • Thai passages shown in RTGS, the Royal Thai General System of romanization, with spaces between words
  • Works on any standard keyboard — no Thai keyboard layout needs to be installed
  • Easy lines like Maeo non lap yu bon sofa talot wan. come first; Hard adds a quotation, a 9:30 meeting and an amount of 1,059.32 dollar
  • 1, 2 or 5 minute timers keep loading new romanized Thai, so you can test steady speed on letter pairs like ng and ph
  • Pasting is blocked and each letter turns green or red as you type, so dropping the h from ph or th is caught at once

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to common questions about the Thai Typing Speed Test.

What does the Thai Typing Speed Test do?

It shows a random Thai passage in RTGS romanization — short everyday lines on Easy up to Hard ones with a date, an amount and a phone number — and reports your words per minute and accuracy when you finish or your timer runs out.

Why romanized Thai instead of native Thai script?

Native Thai script has no spaces between words, which doesn't fit this test's word-by-word scrolling — RTGS (Royal Thai General System) romanization gives a space-separated transliteration that works the same way every other language's passages do here.

Does this test measure real native-script Thai typing speed?

Not directly — it measures how fast and accurately you can type the RTGS romanized form of a Thai passage, which is a different skill from typing on a native Thai keyboard layout.

What is RTGS romanization?

The Royal Thai General System of Transcription, the official way Thailand writes Thai words in Latin letters and the one used on Thai road signs. It has no tone marks, so only plain letters are typed.

Are Thai month names romanized too?

Yes. The Hard passage gives the date as 5 Makarakhom 2027 — Makarakhom is January — so type the month name in full.

Do I need a Thai keyboard layout?

No. You type the romanized text with normal Latin keys, so any keyboard works.

Is this the same as practising the Kedmanee layout?

No. Kedmanee is the standard keyboard for typing Thai script itself; this test builds speed and accuracy on romanized Thai, which doesn't use those keys.
