About

About the Sentence case Converter

Capitalizes only the first letter after a period, question mark, exclamation point or line break, leaving the rest of each sentence lowercase — "THIS IS SHOUTED. so is this." becomes "This is shouted. So is this." It's the everyday casing most normal writing uses.

The text is lowercased first; then the first letter of the text, the first letter after a . ! or ? followed by a space, and the first letter of each new line are capitalised. Because everything else is lowercased, names, places and the word "I" come out in lowercase, so give them a quick pass afterwards. Abbreviations such as "e.g." also count as the end of a sentence.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to common questions about the Sentence case Converter.

How do I convert text to Sentence case?

Type or paste your text above and click Sentence case (or just start typing — this page previews Sentence case live). Copy the result when you're done.

Is this Sentence case converter free?

Yes. It's free, with no sign-up and no limit on how much text you convert.

What counts as the start of a new sentence?

Sentence case capitalizes only the first letter after a period, question mark, exclamation point or line break, leaving the rest of each sentence lowercase.

How is Sentence case different from Title Case?

Sentence case only capitalizes the first word of each sentence, while Title Case capitalizes the first letter of every word — useful for fixing text that was typed in all caps or all lowercase back into normal reading form.

Can I convert to a different case?

Yes — the same tool handles UPPERCASE, lowercase, Title Case, camelCase, PascalCase, snake_case and kebab-case. Click any of the buttons below the input, or use one of the dedicated pages below.

Will Sentence case lowercase names and the word "I"?

Yes. It first lowercases everything, then capitalizes only the first letter after a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or line break. Names, places, acronyms and the pronoun "I" in the middle of a sentence come out lowercase, so give them a quick check.

Does a new line start a new sentence?

Yes. The first letter after every line break is capitalized, which makes it handy for lists, bullet points and subtitles where each line is its own phrase.

Does it handle abbreviations like e.g. or Dr.?

It treats any full stop followed by a space as the end of a sentence, so the word after "e.g." or "Dr." gets a capital letter. If your text uses a lot of abbreviations, scan the result for those spots.

Why use sentence case for headings?

It reads more naturally and is the default for headings and interface text in many style guides, including Google's Material Design and the Microsoft Writing Style Guide. It's also easier to keep consistent, since only the first word and proper nouns get capitals.
