About the Text Compare

Compares two blocks of text line by line and highlights which lines were added, removed or unchanged.

Writers use it to see what changed between two drafts of a document, while developers compare two versions of a config file or snippet. It's part of Toolapt's broader set of free text tools, needing no account and placing no limit on how often you use it.

3 worked examples

01

A single changed line

Comparing three lines where only "This is line two" became "This is line 2" marks that line as removed (−) and added (+), with the other two unchanged: "1 line(s) removed, 1 line(s) added."

02

A line added at the end

Adding "Cherry" as a third line shows up as one added line, + Cherry, with Apple and Banana marked unchanged.

03

Ignoring case

With "Ignore case" turned on, "Hello World" and "hello world" are treated as identical lines, and the tool reports "The two texts are identical."

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to common questions about the Text Compare.

What does Text Compare do?

It compares two blocks of text line by line and shows which lines were added, removed or left unchanged.

Is Text Compare free to use?

Yes. It's free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many times you use it.

Is my text safe when I use this tool?

Yes. Both texts you paste are processed entirely on your own device — nothing is sent to a server.

Can I hide the lines that didn't change?

Yes. Turn off "Show unchanged lines" to see only the lines that were added or removed.

What does "Ignore leading and trailing spaces" do?

It trims spaces at the start and end of each line before comparing, so indentation-only differences don't get flagged as changes.

What does "Ignore case" do?

It treats lines that differ only in capitalization as identical, so "Hello" and "hello" won't be flagged as a change.

Does Text Compare work word by word instead of line by line?

No, it compares whole lines against each other; a single changed word will mark that entire line as changed.

Does Text Compare have any limitations?

It's built for everyday text; extremely long documents are still handled but may take a moment longer to compare.
