About
Converts every letter in your text to its small form — "HELLO World" becomes "hello world". It's the usual normalized form for things like usernames, email addresses and URL slugs before they're stored or compared, since case-sensitive matching can otherwise treat the same value as two different ones.
Two values that look the same to a person — "John@Example.com" and "john@example.com" — can be treated as different by a case-sensitive system, which is how duplicate accounts and failed lookups happen. Lowercasing everything first gives one consistent form, and it works for accented capitals too, so É becomes é and Ü becomes ü.
