About
Change a PNG into an .ico icon file. The converter only changes the format: transparent areas of your PNG stay transparent, and the icon keeps the PNG's own size and shape — nothing is cropped, padded or enlarged.
PNG is the best starting point for an icon, because its alpha channel carries over into the ICO, soft anti-aliased edges and drop shadows included. A PNG up to 256×256 is converted at exactly its own size, so a 32×32 favicon.png becomes a 32×32 favicon.ico. A bigger PNG is scaled down to fit 256×256, the largest image an ICO can hold, keeping its proportions. Small icons are stored inside the ICO as classic 32-bit bitmaps that even old software reads, and icons from 64 pixels up are stored as PNG, which keeps the file small. If you need a full favicon set in several sizes, the Favicon Generator makes that from one image.

FAQ
Quick answers to common questions about the PNG to ICO Converter.
Upload the PNG above, click "Convert to ICO" and download the file. There are no settings — it takes a second and runs entirely in your browser.
Yes. The ICO keeps your PNG's alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels stay that way — you can see this on the preview before downloading.
Only if it's bigger than 256×256, the largest image an ICO can hold; then it's scaled down to fit, keeping its proportions. A PNG of 256×256 or smaller keeps its exact size.
No. A 16×16 or 64×64 PNG stays 16×16 or 64×64. Enlarging would only make it blurry.
Some browsers will show a renamed PNG as a favicon, but Windows and many programs won't accept it as an icon, because the file has no ICO header. Converting builds a proper .ico file that works everywhere.
Use the Favicon Generator. This page converts your PNG to ICO as it is; the Favicon Generator makes every favicon size, an Apple touch icon and a web manifest from one image.
No. The PNG is converted on your own device, and nothing is sent to a server. There's no sign-up and no limit.
