About

About the JPG to ICO Converter

Convert a JPG or JPEG image into an .ico icon file. Upload the photo or logo, click Convert, and download the icon — the picture keeps its shape, with nothing cropped off.

Photos are usually far bigger than an icon can be: an ICO image can be at most 256×256 pixels, so a 4000×3000 photo is scaled down to 256×192, keeping its proportions. Smaller JPGs keep their exact size. Because JPG has no transparency, whatever background the JPG has — usually white — becomes part of the icon. JPG compression can leave faint blocky noise around sharp edges, so start from the highest-quality JPG you have; if you have the same logo as a PNG with a transparent background, the PNG to ICO page will give a cleaner icon. For a set of favicon sizes, use the Favicon Generator.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to common questions about the JPG to ICO Converter.

How do I convert JPG to ICO?

Upload the JPG above, click "Convert to ICO" and download the file. There's nothing to set.

Is JPEG to ICO the same as JPG to ICO?

Yes. JPG and JPEG are the same format with a different file extension, and this converter accepts both.

Why is my photo smaller in the ICO?

An ICO image can be at most 256×256 pixels, so a bigger photo is scaled down to fit — a 4000×3000 photo becomes 256×192. Its proportions don't change and nothing is cropped.

Will my icon have a transparent background?

No. JPG can't store transparency, so the JPG's background — often white — stays in the icon. Use a PNG with a transparent background if you need see-through areas.

Can I use the ICO as a Windows folder icon?

Yes. Right-click the folder, open Properties, then Customize and Change Icon, and browse to the .ico file. Keep the file somewhere permanent, because Windows reads it from that location.

How do I make favicons from a JPG?

Use the Favicon Generator — it makes every favicon size, an Apple touch icon and a web manifest from one image. This page converts the JPG to a single ICO as it is.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The JPG is converted on your own device; nothing is sent anywhere. It's free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
