About the CSV to JSON Converter

Paste rows of comma-separated data and get an array of JSON objects back instantly, with the first row used as the property names for every record. It auto-detects whether your file actually uses commas, semicolons, tabs or pipes, so a spreadsheet export still converts cleanly even if it didn't use commas.

The parser follows the usual CSV rules: a field wrapped in double quotes can contain the delimiter, line breaks and doubled quotes (""), so an address like "12 Main St, Apt 4" stays in one field. Blank lines are skipped, and with the header option on, an empty header cell is named after its position, like column3, so no value is lost.

Guide

Using the CSV to JSON Converter

  1. 1

    Step 1

CSV to JSON is already selected below as the direction.

    Step 2

  4. 4

    Step 4

  • Outputs pretty JSON with a 2-space indent, or minified JSON
  • Copy the result in one click
  • Runs in your browser — free, with no sign-up and nothing uploaded

01

A simple header row

"name,age\nAlice,30\nBob,25" converts to [{"name":"Alice","age":30},{"name":"Bob","age":25}].

02

Semicolon-delimited data

A European-style CSV using semicolons instead of commas is auto-detected and converts just as cleanly.

03

Keeping leading zeros

With number conversion off, a column named zip containing 02134 converts to "zip": "02134" instead of the number 2134.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to common questions about the CSV to JSON Converter.

How do I convert CSV to JSON?

Paste your CSV data above, make sure "CSV to JSON" is selected as the direction, then click Convert. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded anywhere.

Does it use the first row as column names?

Yes, by default. Turn off "First row contains column names" if your data has no header row, and each object will use numbered keys instead.

Does it handle semicolon or tab-separated files?

Yes. It can auto-detect comma, semicolon, tab or pipe delimiters, or you can pick one manually if a file mixes delimiters in a way auto-detection gets wrong.

Are numbers converted to actual numbers in the JSON?

Yes, when "Convert numeric values to numbers" is checked — a cell like 36 becomes the JSON number 36 instead of the string "36". Turn it off to keep every value as a string.

Is this CSV to JSON converter free?

Yes. It's free, with no sign-up and no limit on how much data you convert.

Can I convert JSON back to CSV?

Yes — the same tool handles both directions. Switch the dropdown, or use the dedicated JSON to CSV converter page.

Why did my ZIP codes or IDs lose their leading zeros?

With "Convert numeric values to numbers" on, a value like 007 or 02134 becomes the number 7 or 2134. Untick that option to keep every value as a text string exactly as written.

What if my CSV has no header row?

Untick "First row contains column names" and the keys become column1, column2 and so on. Blank header cells get the same column-number names, so every value still has a key.

Does it convert true and false to booleans?

Yes, when number conversion is on, the exact lowercase words true and false become JSON booleans. Anything else — including Yes, No or TRUE in capitals — stays a string.

Can it read values that contain commas or line breaks?

Yes, as long as the value is wrapped in double quotes, the standard CSV way. Commas and line breaks inside quotes stay part of the value, and a doubled quote ("") becomes a single quote mark. Blank lines are skipped.
