Hash Generator

Generate SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hashes of any text online — free and instant.

About

About the Hash Generator

Computes SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 checksums of any text you type, all at once.

Developers use it to quickly check a checksum while debugging, while students use it to see how the same input produces a different hash under each algorithm. It's one of many free data tools on Toolapt, and like every tool here, it's free to use with no sign-up and no limit on how many times you run it.

Guide

Using the Hash Generator

  1. 1

    Step 1

Type or paste the text you want to hash.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Click "Generate hashes" to compute all four algorithms at once.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Copy whichever hash you need from the result.

  4. 4

    Step 4

Click Clear to start over with different text.

  • Computes SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 simultaneously, not one at a time
  • Uses the browser's native Web Crypto API — no external library to load
  • Nothing you type is ever sent anywhere; hashing happens entirely on your device
  • Free to use, with no limit on how many times you run it
  • Fully responsive, so it works just as well on a phone as on a desktop

Developers

Developers use the Hash Generator for quickly checking a checksum while writing or debugging code that hashes data.

Students studying cryptography

Students studying cryptography use the Hash Generator for seeing how the same input produces a completely different hash under each algorithm.

System administrators

System administrators use the Hash Generator for generating a reference hash of a short string to compare against another system.

Anyone verifying data integrity

Anyone verifying data integrity uses the Hash Generator for confirming that two pieces of text are identical by comparing their hashes.

Examples

3 worked examples

01

Hashing "hello"

Typing "hello" produces SHA-1 aaf4c61ddcc5e8a2dabede0f3b482cd9aea9434d and SHA-256 2cf24dba5fb0a30e26e83b2ac5b9e29e1b161e5c1fa7425e73043362938b9824, computed simultaneously.

02

A single character changes everything

Hashing "Hello" instead of "hello" produces a completely different SHA-256 result, since even a capitalization change avalanches through the whole hash.

03

Comparing two pieces of text

Hashing two copies of the same paragraph and comparing their SHA-256 output is a quick way to confirm the text is byte-for-byte identical.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to common questions about the Hash Generator.

What does the Hash Generator do?

It computes SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 checksums of any text you type, all at the same time.

Is the Hash Generator free to use?

Yes. It's free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many times you use it.

Is my input safe when I use this tool?

Yes. Hashing runs entirely in your browser through the Web Crypto API — your text is never sent to a server.

Why isn't MD5 offered?

MD5 is no longer considered safe for integrity or security checks, since practical collision attacks against it are well known — this tool only offers algorithms still considered safe for general use.

Can a hash be reversed back to the original text?

No. A cryptographic hash is a one-way function — you can check whether two pieces of text match by comparing their hashes, but you can't recover the original text from the hash alone.

Does capitalization or whitespace change the hash?

Yes. Even a single character difference — including case or an extra space — produces a completely different hash.

Can I use the Hash Generator on my phone?

Yes. The page is fully responsive and works on mobile, tablet and desktop browsers alike.

Does the Hash Generator have any limitations?

It hashes text input only; hashing a file directly is handled by the separate File Hash Calculator tool.
