About the Line Prefix, Suffix and Numbering

Adds a prefix and/or suffix to every line of a list, with optional numbering, zero-padding and a custom separator.

Developers use it to wrap a list of values in quotes or brackets for code, while writers number a list of steps or references. It's one of many free text tools on Toolapt, and like every tool here, it's free to use with no sign-up and no limit on how many times you run it.

01

Wrap values in quotes for code

Paste apple, banana and cherry on separate lines with Prefix set to " and Suffix set to ", to get "apple", then "banana", then "cherry", each wrapped and comma-terminated.

Zero-padded numbered list

With 3 items, numbering turned on starting at 1, and zero-padding enabled, the output reads 01. apple, 02. banana, 03. cherry — padding is based on the total line count.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to common questions about the Line Prefix, Suffix and Numbering.

What does Line Prefix, Suffix and Numbering do?

It adds text to the start and/or end of every line in a list, and can number the lines with a custom starting number and separator.

Is this tool free to use?

Yes. It's free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many times you use it.

Is my list safe when I use this tool?

Yes. Your list is processed entirely on your own device — nothing is sent to a server.

Can I add both a prefix and a suffix at the same time?

Yes. Fill in both the Prefix and Suffix fields and both will be applied to every line in the same pass.

What does "Pad numbers with zeros" do?

It pads line numbers with leading zeros (01, 02, 03 ...) so they line up evenly, based on the total number of lines.

Can I start numbering from something other than 1?

Yes. Set "Numbering start" to whatever number you want the first line to begin at.

What does "Skip blank lines" do?

It leaves empty lines untouched, so they aren't given a prefix, suffix or number.

Does this tool have any limitations?

It's built for everyday lists; extremely large lists are still handled but may take a moment longer to process.
