SERP Snippet Preview

Google measures titles and descriptions in pixels, not characters, and can rewrite them — treat this as a close estimate, not a guarantee.

About

About the SERP Snippet Preview

Shows how a page's title, URL and meta description will appear as a Google search result, and measures both in pixels so you can see whether either will be cut off.

Bloggers and content writers use it to tune a headline and description before publishing, while SEO specialists use it during audits to spot titles that run too long and get cut off with an ellipsis. It's one of many free SEO tools on Toolapt, and like every tool here, it's free to use with no sign-up and no limit on how many times you run it.

Examples

SERP Snippet Preview examples

3 worked examples

01

A title that's too long

A 74-character title such as "The Complete Beginner's Guide to Growing Tomatoes at Home in Small Gardens" measures 719 px, past the ~600 px limit, so the preview cuts it at the last whole word and adds an ellipsis — move the key words to the front.

02

Desktop vs mobile description

A 149-character meta description measures 903 px: it fits the 920 px desktop limit with 17 px to spare, but switched to Mobile (about 680 px) it is cut after "soil, watering" — so put the important part first.

03

Breadcrumb-style URL

The URL https://www.example.com/blog/seo-tips/ is shown the way Google displays it: example.com as the site name, with https://www.example.com › blog › seo-tips underneath.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to common questions about the SERP Snippet Preview.

What does the SERP Snippet Preview do?

It shows how your page's title, URL and meta description will look as a Google search result, and tells you whether the title or description is long enough to be cut off.

How long should a title tag be?

Google cuts titles off at roughly 600 pixels on desktop, which is usually around 50–60 characters. Wide letters like W and M use more space than narrow ones like i and l, which is why this tool measures pixels rather than counting characters.

How long should a meta description be?

Desktop results show roughly 920 pixels of description (about 150–160 characters) and mobile results show less, about 680 pixels. Anything longer is cut off with an ellipsis.

Why does Google show a different title or description than mine?

Google sometimes rewrites titles and builds its own snippet from the page's text when it thinks that matches the search better. A clear, accurate title and description that fit the limits make that less likely, but it's never guaranteed.

Is the preview exactly what Google will show?

It's a close estimate. It uses Arial at Google's font sizes to measure widths, but Google's exact fonts and layout differ slightly between devices and change from time to time.

Is the SERP Snippet Preview free to use?

Yes. It's free, with no sign-up and no limit on how many times you use it.

Is my input safe when I use this tool?

Yes. The preview and every measurement are worked out in your own browser — nothing you type is sent to a server.
