Guide

Using the Break-Even Point Calculator

  1. 1

    Step 1

Enter your total fixed costs — the costs that don't change with how many units you sell.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Enter the price you sell each unit for, and the variable cost of producing each one.

  3. 3

    Step 3

Click "Calculate" to see the break-even units, break-even revenue and contribution margin.

  • Calculates the exact number of units needed to break even, rounded up to a whole unit
  • Shows the revenue that break-even point represents in currency, not just a unit count
  • Shows the contribution margin per unit — how much of each sale goes toward covering fixed costs
  • Shows the contribution margin as a percentage of the selling price
  • Flags it clearly if the price per unit isn't greater than the variable cost, since break-even is impossible then
  • Works entirely in your browser — no installs and no sign-up
  • Free to use, with no limit on how many times you run it

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to common questions about the Break-Even Point Calculator.

What does the Break-Even Point Calculator do?

It calculates how many units you need to sell to cover your fixed and variable costs, based on your fixed costs, price per unit and variable cost per unit.

Is the Break-Even Point Calculator free to use?

Yes. It's free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many times you use it.

Is my cost and pricing data safe when I use this tool?

Yes. Everything you enter is processed entirely on your own device — nothing is sent to a server.

What counts as a fixed cost versus a variable cost?

Fixed costs stay the same regardless of how many units you sell — like rent or salaries. Variable costs scale with each unit — like materials or per-unit shipping.

What does "contribution margin" mean?

It's the amount left from each unit's sale price after covering its variable cost — the part that contributes toward paying off fixed costs and, beyond break-even, toward profit.

What happens if my price per unit isn't higher than my variable cost?

The calculator shows a message explaining that the price per unit must be greater than the variable cost per unit — otherwise every sale loses money and no break-even point exists.

Why does the break-even unit count get rounded up?

You can't sell a fraction of a unit in most businesses, so the result rounds up to the next whole unit to guarantee you've actually covered your costs.

Can I use the Break-Even Point Calculator on my phone?

Yes. The page is fully responsive and works on mobile, tablet and desktop browsers alike.
