About

About the Text to Speech

Reads any text aloud using your browser's built-in speech synthesis, with a choice of voices, rate and pitch.

Proofreaders use it to hear a draft read back and catch errors the eye skips over, while language learners listen to pronunciation of unfamiliar text. It's one of many free text tools on Toolapt, and like every tool here, it's free to use with no sign-up and no limit on how many times you run it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to common questions about the Text to Speech.

What does Text to Speech do?

It reads any text you type or paste aloud, using your browser's built-in speech synthesis engine.

Is Text to Speech free to use?

Yes. It's free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many times you use it.

Is my text sent to a server to generate the audio?

Not to Toolapt — the speech is generated by your browser and operating system's own speech synthesis engine. Most voices run on your device, but some online voices offered by the browser (such as the "Google" voices in Chrome) send the text to the browser maker's speech service. Pick a voice installed on your system if you want it to stay on your device.

Which voices are available?

Whichever voices are already installed on your device or browser; the list in the Voice dropdown reflects what your system offers, so it varies from device to device.

What do the Rate and Pitch settings do?

Rate controls how fast the voice speaks (0.5x to 2x normal speed), and Pitch controls how high or low the voice sounds (0 to 2).

Can I pause playback partway through?

Yes. Click Pause to pause, then Resume to continue from where it stopped, or Stop to end playback entirely.

Why don't I see any voices, or why does playback not work?

This can happen if your browser doesn't support speech synthesis, or if voices haven't finished loading yet — try again after the page has fully loaded.

Does Text to Speech have any limitations?

Voice quality and the available voice list depend entirely on your browser and operating system, which this tool doesn't control.
