About
SHA-512 produces a 512-bit digest, shown as 128 hex characters — the longest output in the SHA-2 family. Despite being the biggest, it's often the fastest of the four on 64-bit CPUs, since it operates on 64-bit words natively rather than the 32-bit words SHA-256 uses.
A plain SHA-512 hash isn't the same as the "$6$" password hashes in Linux's /etc/shadow: those use SHA-512-crypt, which adds a random salt and runs thousands of rounds. Plain SHA-512 is fast by design — great for checksums, but a poor choice for storing passwords, where bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2 belong.

With the box empty, SHA-512 produces cf83e1357eefb8bdf1542850d66d8007d620e4050b5715dc83f4a921d36ce9ce47d0d13c5d85f2b0ff8318d2877eec2f63b931bd47417a81a538327af927da3e — 128 hex characters.
Paste a downloaded file's expected SHA-512 checksum next to the value this tool computes for the same content; if the two 128-character strings match exactly, the file wasn't altered.
FAQ
Quick answers to common questions about the SHA-512 Hash Generator.
Type or paste your text above and click Generate hashes. The SHA-512 value appears in the results table — hashing happens directly in your browser, using the Web Crypto API.
Yes. It's free, with no sign-up and no limit on how much text you hash.
SHA-512 works on 64-bit words internally, which lines up naturally with modern 64-bit CPUs, while SHA-256 works on 32-bit words — so on a 64-bit machine, SHA-512 can outrun SHA-256 despite producing a longer output.
Both are considered secure with no known practical attacks; SHA-512's larger output gives it a higher theoretical brute-force resistance, but for most everyday use SHA-256's 256-bit security margin is already far beyond what's practically breakable.
Yes. Everything runs directly in your browser using the Web Crypto API — nothing is uploaded anywhere.
512 bits, shown as 128 hexadecimal characters.
Not on its own. A plain hash is fast to compute, which also makes it fast to guess. Store passwords with a dedicated password-hashing function such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2, which add a salt and are deliberately slow.
The input isn't byte-for-byte identical — a trailing space, a Windows line ending or a different character encoding all change the result. This tool hashes your text exactly as typed, as UTF-8.
A variant that runs SHA-512 with different starting values and keeps only the first 256 bits. It isn't offered here; this tool produces standard SHA-512.
