About

About the Passphrase Generator

Builds random, word-based passphrases from a list of over 180 common words, with your choice of word count, separator and letter case.

People who find long random character strings hard to type or remember use it to get a passphrase that's still strong but easier to read out or enter on a phone keyboard, while IT teams use it to hand out memorable temporary credentials. It's one of many free generators on Toolapt, and like every tool here, it's free to use with no sign-up and no limit on how many times you run it.

Pick a separator (hyphen, dot, underscore or space) and a letter-case style.

  3. 3

    Step 3

  • Picks words at random from a list of over 180 common words, using the browser's cryptographically secure random source

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to common questions about the Passphrase Generator.

What does the Passphrase Generator do?

It builds one or more passphrases from random common words, with your choice of word count, separator, letter case, and an optional number and symbol.

Is the Passphrase Generator free to use?

Yes. It's free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many times you use it.

Is my input safe when I use this tool?

Yes. Every passphrase is generated and shown entirely on your own device — nothing is sent to a server, and passphrases aren't stored anywhere.

Are the passphrases cryptographically secure?

Yes. Each word, number and symbol is picked using your browser's crypto.getRandomValues API, not Math.random() or another predictable formula.

Why use words instead of random characters?

A phrase of several random words is often easier to type correctly and remember than a similarly strong string of random characters, while still being very hard to guess.

Why does the message show a number of "bits" of entropy?

It's a measure of how hard the passphrase would be to guess by brute force — the higher the number, the more attempts an attacker would need, roughly doubling with every extra bit.

Can I use the Passphrase Generator on my phone?

Yes. The page is fully responsive and works on mobile, tablet and desktop browsers alike.

Does the Passphrase Generator have any limitations?

It generates 3 to 12 words per phrase and up to 30 phrases at a time from a fixed English word list — it doesn't support custom word lists or other languages.
